Calathea 'Beauty Star'
Botanical Name: Calathea 'Beauty Star'
Common Names: Peacock Plant, Zebra Plant
There are several dozen species in this genus. Native to the tropical Americas, many of the species are popular as pot plants due to their decorative leaves and, in some species, colorful inflorescence. They are commonly called calatheas or (like their relatives) prayer plants. Like other plants in the marantaceae family, this Calathea has the interesting habit of rising its leaves in the morning and lowering them at night, like in prayer, giving it the nickname “prayer plant.” The “Beauty Star” Calathea has elegant upright growth and is fairly dense, making a nice interesting color-pop of an addition to your collection of plants. A healthy Calathea “Beauty star” will grow up to two feet in height and two feet in width. Its active growth season is from March to October. The bright stripes on this plant will turn white as it ages.
NATIVE LAND: Tropical Forests of Brazil
WATER: Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Best way to check this is simply by using your finger. is dry soil should remain moist, but never soggy. Humidity is a major key in keeping this plant happy. Try keeping the humidity above 50 percent, or mist your plant daily.
LIGHT: Bright yet indirect light. too little light is better than too much light for this plant
ISSUES:
stop in growth - usually indicates light conditions are too late
brown leaf tips - overwatering or water with high mineral content. Try using rain water or filtered water to avoid “salting” your plant with the added minerals in tap water
BENEFITS: Extremely effective at purifying surrounding air
PET/KID FRIENDLY: Not toxic for humans or pets
