$33.00

Botanical Name: Adiantium capillus-veneris

Common Name(s): Black Maidenhair Fern, Maidenhair Fern, Southern Maidenhair Fern, Venus Hair Fern

From temperature, to water, to sunlight, maidenhair ferns are drama queens in every way. 'Maidenhair Fern' actually refers to the genus Adiantum, which has over 250 species. Its genus name translates to “non wetting” and refers to the fronds’ ability to shed rainwater without becoming wet. This plant is the source of an aromatic, volatile oil commonly used as a shampoo, which is where its common name of maidenhair derived. Our Maidenhair fern, sometimes called the 'Black' Maidenhair Fern, is native to the southern half of the United States and South America, but has a worldwide distribution today. It is a popular choice for its many soft, delicate leaves. The Black Maidenhair fern grows up to 15 in in height, and prefers care similar to other ferns, preferring indirect sunlight or partial shade and moderate moisture.

NATIVE LAND: Southern United States &South America

WATER: Keep soil consistently moist and well-drained. This plant won’t tolerate soil drying out. Water daily or every other day, never allowing the soil to dry out. We suggest keeping him/her in a plastic pot with holes and setting inside a more appealing outer pot. If done this way, you can easily check on the moisture levels in the plastic pot, yet the drainage holes will prevent the soil from becoming too soggy. Mist the plant with warm water a couple of times a day in order to maintain the proper moisture levels on its delicate leaves.

LIGHT: indirect sunlight/shade. You want to mimic their natural forest environment, in which this plant would be primarily covered by a canopy of trees, receiving a bit of shade and a bit of partial sunlight.

ISSUES: leaves curling up/ leaf tips turning dry/ leaves falling off rapidly - likely means your plant needs more moisture and humidity. Mist daily and do not put in a location that drops below 70 degrees Fahrenheit or has a cool draft from an air vent.

BENEFITS: Used in a medicinal way to aid with bronchitis, coughs, whooping cough, and heavy menstruation with cramps. It is also used to loosen chest congestion.

PET/KID FRIENDLY: Nontoxic for human and pets
