Succulent 'Elephant Bush'
Botanical Name: Portulacaria Afra
Common Names: Elephant Bush, Elephant’s Food
Commonly referred to as Elephant’s Food, thus the name Elephant Bush. In nature, the greenery is heavily browsed by animals and a firm favorite among elephants. The elephant bush is a common succulent native to South Africa. Cultivated as an ornamental plant, this plant is a great choice for any beginner succulent collector as it is very low maintenance and its dense bright green leaves are an essential look. The elephant bush has small, round pad-like leaves with thick reddish brown stems and can grow as a tree or a small shrub depending on your planting preferences.
NATIVE LAND:
WATER: Water ever 3-4 weeks, extremely drought tolerant
LIGHT: Full sun to partial shade
ISSUES: Plant has become swollen and discolored.
BENEFITS: The foliage is edible- although we don’t recommend eating -and is commonly eaten in southern Africa, usually in salads or soups to add a sour flavor – and was traditionally used medicinally for a variety of minor ailments.
